What To Look For When Seeking An Electrician

Updated: Nov 4

If you need electrical upgrades in your home, you most likely need to hire an electrician to complete the work. When looking and hiring one, there are several factors to consider.

Most importantly, you want to trust the company your hiring and know you're getting what you pay for.

Key Factors to Consider When Choosing an Electrician

  • Licensing: Make sure the electrician you hire is licensed and insured. This helps protect you if anything were to go wrong on the job.

  • Value for your money: Contact a few companies for quotes to make sure you're getting the best deal. Some companies, such as L&M, pride themselves on being affordable. While others will price gouge and try to upsell unnecessary work.

  • Qualifications/Experience: Do your homework and check the company's qualifications and their employee's experience. The company website and Google reviews are a great place to start! You can also check HomeAdvisor and Porch for reviews.

  • Recommendations/Reviews: Reviews and recommendations will give you insight into what to expect. Typically if a company is recommended they are respectable and worth the money.

  • Warranties: Ask if the company warrants their work. Companies that do stand by their work, and essentially are guaranteeing it will be correct. If a company doesn't offer a warranty, that should raise further questions regarding qualifications.

Reputable companies will be transparent during your conversations and should answer any and all questions you have. They should also be affordable, licensed, and insured.

Preparation

After you've selected the company you'll need to prepare for the service. Before the electrician comes out, be thorough and detailed when describing what you're needing and wanting to be done. This will help cut down the amount of time the actual service will take because everything that needs to be done will be known upfront. It may help to compose a list of the tasks you want to be done and send it to the electrician prior to their arrival. This is also the time to ask any and all questions you have. It's okay to ask questions about what to expect, timeframe, money, etc.

At your home, you should make sure the panel box is accessible, put away fragile items, and lock up any aggressive animals. The last thing you want to deal with is a broken vase or angry dog.

During the service be prepared to lose power. When working with electricity, the safest way to make upgrades is done after power has been shut off. This helps decrease the chance of electrical shock.

Lastly, be prepared for payment. If payment wasn't collected upfront, it will be taken once the service is completed. It's typically best to be prepared to pay by either credit card or check. If you'd like to pay using an alternate method make sure you discuss that option upfront when scheduling the service.
