ABOUT THE CITY OF MADISON
Located in a county with the same name, Madison is by the northern border of the state of Alabama and extends west into the nearby county of Limestone. It’s also located inside the metropolitan area of Huntsville. The population, within the city limits, is around fifty-thousand residents.
The area of Madison has a long history of indigenous cultures, going back thousands of years. It was settled by European-Americans in 1818 and was referred to as Madison Station.
Madison was eventually incorporated in 1869 and for almost the next hundred years, had just a few hundred residents. During and after World War 2, military and NASA moving to the metro-Hunstville area stimulating population growth to the area. In 1986, Madison residents decided not to merge with the city of Huntsville and instead decided to stay independent.
